LIBRARIES SHOULD BE FREE SERVICE

The visiting British library authority, Mr. Lionel R. Colvin, secreLary of the Assoeiation in London, had something to say about the full development of library service. Speaking at a civic reeeption at Wellington, he said that two things are still neeessary. These are oveii closer co-opera-tion between town and a country service and the freeing of public libraries from the subscription system. Libraries, ho said, should be as free as school and health services. Mr. Colvin said he found library work all over New Zealand well developed. "Wellington, he said, had the best library building in the southern hemisphere and one of the best stocks.
