WORKS CO-ORDINATION IN NEW ZEALAND

Projects And Employment Advance Together The !N'ew South Wales Government's plan to form a State Development Council, as expounded by the Hon. C'. E. Martin, New South Wales Attor-ney-General, in a recent broadcast, was discussed briefly by the Minister of Finance, Mr. Na-sh, in an interview in Rotorua yesterday evening. The council, according to the broadcast, would be in effect, a co-ordina-ting body within the framework of the Cabinet," whose duties would be to determine a policy to be followed by the Government in relation to public works generally and developmental projects in .particular. It would establish priorities that must be a Government's responsibility and in all ways tie up the public works programme with the need for full' employment.

Mr. Nash said that a sinular system had been in operation "in New Zealand for some time. The Minister of Works' 10-year regional programme throughout the country was administered in a similar way. Advisory committees forwarded their estimates to a central body, which embraced the sohemes in its overall Dominion project. Thus, said Mr. Nash, all factors were taken into account at the one time, and a close tag was kept on expenditure and employment.
