CORONER COMMENTS ON GIRL'S BRAVERY

Attempted Rescue Of Boy From Drowning * AUCKLAND, last night. "You are a brave little girl for your years, and I think you should be very highly commended for your courage-r cus act," said the Coroner, Mr. H. Addison, to Shirley Norton, aged 12, daughter of Constable J. Norton, of Helensville, during the 'hearing of an inquest into the death of Peter Crawford McCartie, a -schoolboy, aged 14, who was drowned at Henderson. •

Evidence was given that on January 20 the deceased, accompanied by Shirley Norton and another small girl, were in Falls Parlc, Henderson. Deceased was swinging on a rope over a fresh-water pool, and while the girl was walking away from the pool, she heard a splash. S-he ran to the bank where deceased was calling for help, dived into the water, and grabbed hold of him. Deceased was struggling' and pulled her under. She almost had him to the side of the pool when she became exhausted, and was unable to hold on to him any longer. She was assisted out of the water by the other girl, and ran liome to tell her father what had happened. ■Constable Norton and another man went to the pool, where the body of deceased Was recovefed. A verdict of accidental drowning was returned.
