THIRD DAY OF STRUGGLE TO MAINTAIN POWER
LONDON, Februai'y 12. "The New Battle of Bi'itain" is now the fight to get coal through the snow to lceep the power stations -going. The battle is now in xts third day. The weather is the main enemy, axid to-day it is severe." Temperatures in most parts of the country are again below freezing-poiht, and the forecast is very cold for some days. . j The British people have been warned that the big power cuts imposed to avert complete electricity stoppage may be applied to new J areas. Power 'plants in northe-east and south- west England and Scotland have been warned tc stand-by for orders to join the big switchoff. Correspondents say the Government may rnake a decision on this some time to-day/.
The War Office is considering whether bulldozers and other military equipffient can be used to clear ice and snow, and arrangements are in hand for the R.A.F. to help wherever possible. One of Britain's biggest. cigarette factories has announced that no more supplies can be sent tb retailers uritil the situation has improved. | A fuel crisis has developed in Eire, too. The country has no- coal reserves, and plans are in hand for a three weeks' economy drive. Germany is having its colclest spell for 50 years. The town of Lublih, dn Poland, has been completely- cut off for two days by huge snowdrifts. Ice floes in Italy have broken a bridge over the River Po. Sixty-six degi-ees of frost are reported from Norway.
