SHEARING RECORD ON SOUTHLAND STATION
TWO WAIKATO MEN fALLY 552 1>HEEP IN DAY. | J- — A sheep-shearing recond which was j established in a Southland shed 10 j years ago and has remained unbeaten ( since was brolcen by Maori shearers"; from the Waikato recently. A mes- j sage from the So.uth reports that two ! North Island Maoris hetween them put up an putsfanding record by shearing 552 sheep in one day of 8 'hours 40 minutes. The record, which is an official one, was estAblished iii Mr.. F. Gutschlag's shed at Greenvale. The sliearers were Mr. Joe Waitere of Te Mata, who shore 355 sheep, and Mr. Piki Te Huia, of Taihape. The sheep were normalsized crossbreds carrying a year's growth of wool, and except for the last few, were all clean sheep. The previous best tally for Mr. ■Gutschlag's shed was 208 in a day, established 10 years ago. Some southern farmers claim that northern shearers are reluctant to go south because they maintain that the sheep are too heavily wooled. If the claim can be sustained the achievement of Waitere and Te Huia-is all the more creditable.
