HIGH SCHOOL ROLL AT PRESENT 387
Shortage Of Quahhed Women Teachers At the end of- the first week of the pevv scholastic year, the secondary loll of the Rotorua High School stands at 387, compared with 390 last year, and it is expected to toueh the. 400 in ark early in the term. The number of intermediate pupils is 220, against 173 last year. Four prefabricated classrooms are in course of construction and additional furniture has been ordered. The sections of the new rooms are dilapidated and severely weather-worn in Pai'ts, but^ the interior walls will be treated with only one coat of oil, acco^'ding to the departmental specifications. The result will not be a very presentable classroom, and the provision of guttering for tlre^eaves has been considered nnnecessary. Another difficiilty nnder which the school is labourmg is» the shortage of qualified w-omen teachers, especially in science and allied subjects, but that, apparently, is the experience of high schools everywhere." The staff of the secondary -department at present consists of 10 men and five women; ordinarily the proportion would be eight to seven.
