LONDON, Fel). I Nearly 100 people are, so farknown to have lost their lives » ■ when the British river steamer Siren caught fire in Hongkong Karbour. There were' over 200 passengers on board the vessel and many were trapped below decks by iron bars which had . been put across the portholes as precaution against pirates. " ! Others were dpowned when they jumped overboard to escape the; fiames. Chinese and Europeans dived intti the harbour to rescue passengers. The Siren was due to sa.il for Can* • tui when the fire broke out ^nd petrol drums on board exploded. It is expected that the casualties will be higher than 100. A late message added that the fire broke out in a cargo. of oil and lcerosene and the 2000-ton -vessel was ■quickly enveloped in flames. I
