WEEKLY AIR SERVICE ACROSS PACIFIC
(Press Assr
AGREEMENT REACHED AUSTRALIA AND UNITED STATES CO-OPERATE
i. — Rec. 9.80 p.m.)
MELBOURNE, Feb. 4. Anstralia and the United States will operate a weekly air service across the Paeific from Februaiy 23. This was decided following negotiations between the Australian Civil Aviation Department « and the United States Civil Aeronautics Authority. Both services will be allowed to piek up and set down passengers l'rom Australia and will be permitted to alight at San Francisco instead of being carried on to Vancouver, as is now the case. . Pan Ameridan Airways will probably press for a reduction in fare rqtes. This ends the deadlock which has existed since December, when a reciprocal landing rights agreement was signed in the United States. Since then Australian National. Airways has operated a fortnightly service betwhen Melbourne and Vancouver, but the refusal of the United States to grant the company an operating licence until satisfied that the service was "efficient and convenient, has so far prevented the Australian company from picking up or setting down passengers ,and freight on American territory.
