INLAND STORMS RELIEVE HEAT WAVE IN N.S.W.

SYDNEY, January 31. Severe inland heat, broken temporarily in some northern areas by electrical storms, continues to cause discomfort and anxiety over large sections of 'New South Wiales. Many inland centres had a succession of days with temperatures exceeding 100 degrees until yesterday, when a slight cool break relieved conditions. Motorists near the Queensland border had a narrow escape w-hen a fireball struck the hitumen road 40 feet in front of their car and bounced into a ne^rby tree, which emitted clouds of white smoke and showers of splinters. A resumption of the heat wave inland is -predieted by the divisional meteorologist who says that rainfalls yesterday were disa-ppointing. In Burke thq temperature averaged fl;05.'6 degrees for 19 days. Water conservation departments have begun to build weirs in the Darling River. Diubbo had its lowest temperature for a fortnight yesterday when the reading fell to 95. Kyogle, Murce and Mudgee report rain, which helped to relieve the drought conditions. After weeks of heat and dust storms, Mudgee suffered damage to roofs and fences by violent rain and wind.
