TROOPS FOR JAPAN LEAVE "HELL SHIP".

BRISBANE, Jan. 25. Military police drew their pistols in an efforl to stop A.I.F. troops and airmen bound for Japan storming ashore at Brisbane from the troopship Manoora. About 650 of 1050 troops aboard broke througb the police cordon and went into Brisbane. When the Manoora neared the wharf officers told the men that they would not be granted shore leave. Some of the men immediately dived overboard and swam ashore. Their mates in the ship cheered them as they reaclied the wharf and walked through the gate towards the city. When the ship tied up scores of men slid down the mooring ropes and ran towards the gates. Naval sentries and a small military police guard at the wharf could not stop them. Military police reinforcements were hurried to the wharf hut they were unable to prevent the troops and airmen swarming from the ship. Some of the men complained that the Manoora was a hell-ship with inadequate quarters and no amenities on hoard.
