WASHINGTON, Jair.;22. In the presence of President Truman apd other high officials. General George Marshall was sworn" in a Secretary of State by ..Chief Justiee Vinson. Prior to the ceremony, Mr. Marshall, who is now a eivilian as his retirement from- the Army takes effect' from the date-pf. his assumption of his new office, w&S c-i' the opinion that his new jolj would be tougher than his wartim'e task beeause "military affairs wefe my business." Mr. Marshall made the following statement; "I think tlns^g a good time to terminate speculation regarding me in a political way. I pssuming that the Secretafy o# State's office, under present conditions, is non-political and Will ; govern myself aecordingly. "I will never become .mvotve4 in political matters and, theirefore, cannot be considered mi * candidate for political office. "The popular conreption thafc.no matter what a man says he can ha drafted as a candidate for political 'office would he without any force with regard to- ihe. I never cojild be drafted. I am being expliclt and emiphatie in order to terminate, oiice and for all, any discussion of . my name with regard to politics! matters." Mr. Marshall 's name had been mentioned as . a possibie nominee fo-r the Presidency.
