To-Day's Weather Foreeast The Govern.ment Met-eorologist has issued the following weather report and foreeast: — Situation: An anti-cyclone extends over New Zealand, while a deep depression is passing eastwards in the south' Tasman Sea. Conditions are likely to become rather dry in the National Parlc distriet, but skies are likely to remain grey to-mor-row. Foreeast for Rotorua: Winds will be light to moderate and variable, Avith westerlies predominating. The weather should continue fair to fine and warm. The maximum temperature recorded in Rotorua yesterday was 73:2 degrees compared with 70.2 the previous day. Petition Being Filled The petition protesting against the destruction of the Australian gum tree, and the lily pond in the G'overnment Gardens had still more signatures attaehed to it yesterday, with the . result that there are now 32 names on the doeument whieh is on the counter at the "Morning Post." R.S.A. Bowling Tournament Forty team nominations have been | received and accepted hy the Roto- | rua Returned Servicemens' Associj ation for its bowling tournament' ; whieh opens in Rotorua on March 10. Approximately 35 of the nominations are from every part of the North Island. Section play will be run in four sections of ten teams. Famine Emergency Coupons Meat, butter, sugar and tea coupons received during the period December 16 last to January 17, on behalf of the Famine Emergency Appeal, at the Rotorua Post Office, were as follows: — Red Cross Society: Meat £10/5/6, butter 10 pounds, sugar 15 pounds, tea 5S pounds. From churches and individuals: Meat £42/12/6, butter 22% pounds, sugar 7i pounds, tea half a pound.

Competitions in MayThe Rotorua Competitions Society will hold its second annual festival in- the municipal concert chamber from May 9 to 15, and the demonstration sessions will be held in the municipal theatre on May 16. Requests for syllabuses have already been received from as far afield as the Soutb Island, and it is already apparent that an additional hall will be required. Copies will be available i in about ten days' time and entries Avill close on March 20.

State Forestry Houses On Monday, trainees from the Rotorua Rehabilitation Carpentry Training Centre will comraence work on four dwelling houses to be built on a block at the lower end of Te Wairoa Road. The buildings will house staff. of the Forestry Service. The construction c-f the dwellings is part of the trainees' eourse. The houses will be practically identical with the design of State rental houses, and will be built entirely by rehabilitation trainees. Some of the men will have the opportunity of taking up carpentering with the State Forest Service. In the Gardens Asked what is Rotorua's hest manmade asset, nine out of ten of our citizens would probably reply the Government Gardens. These, yesterday morning, were certainly a pleasant spo-t. The sun was shining brightly — as it occasionally does during the holiday period — and overlooked smooth, green lawns and bright flower-beds. Here and there were people walking, and taking in the beauty of the scene, or resting in the shade of the trees. Children passed o-n their way to the baths, and on their velvet greens, bowlers bowled. S.P.C.A. Street Appeal The S.P.C.A. will hold its street appeal to raise funds for the pi'oposed animal clinic, on Friday, and as on the last oecasion, the programme includes a children's pet parade, to be staged in Amohau Street, outside the Ritz Hall, at 2.15 p.m. sharp. Prizes are offered for the best-conditioned dog, the best trained dog, and the best tail-wagger. Entries will be restricted to animals shown in the ring by persons under the age of 18 years.
