BYRD'S MEN WALK INTO LITTLE AMERICA
NEW YORK, January 19. After trekking across the silent, frozen snow wastes, 11 foot-weary men of the Byrd expedition wallced into Little America, the icy Antarctic coast settlement — the first to set foot in it since its abandonment on February 1, 1'941— and found frozen hani and chiekens in perfect condition, as well as a newspaper proclaiming President Roosevelt's third term eleetion. All the men saw on approaching the site \fere four metal ventilators about four feet above the snow, four snow flues sticking about six feet into tbe air, and a forest of antennae poles. The party dug into the snow to the skylight and then droppecl down linside. It was as dark as a coalmine, but the tunnels are still usable as an emergency winter camp. The narrow tunnels were jumbled withhuge piles of stores. The food included steaks already out and wanting to be grilled.
