KNEW HIS WAVES
The first doctorate of science in Australia for meteorological investigations has been awarded to Mr. H. M. Treloar of the Central Weather Bureau, Melbourne. e .During tbe war he was on the Directorate of Meteorological Services. His work included the forecasting of waves and swell for landing and invasion purposes, which played an important part in the Pacific war. By measuring waves ofr the coast of New South Wales, Mr. Treloar was able to establish that storms in east New Zeaiand sent a swell of 8 to 10 feet into Bass Strait. Mr. Treloar's method was found sufficiently reliable for forecasting data from Townsville for the use of eonvoys going and coming from the islands, and greatly facilitated beachhead landings. His investigations also included work 'on abnormal propagation of radio signals and on wind systems for hig'h altitude flying.
