CARETAKER CABINET FORMALLY RESIGNS

PARIS, Jan. 17. The French Parliament to-day eleeted M. Yincent- Auriol as President of the Fourth Republic. The two Hotlses, the National Assembly and the Council of the Republic, met at the Palace of Versailles in joint session for the election. M. Auriol, the Socialist president of the National Assembly, received a small majerity over the combinqd votes of the other candidates. No Communist was nominated. The election of "M. Auriol was received with enthusiasm. The Deputies rose and most of them sang the Marseillaise. The National Assemhly (the "lower" House), to the presidfency of which M. Auriol was recently eleeted, will now have to choose a new president. About 800 members of the two legislative bodies' were in joint session. The names of six candidates were submitted, including two "freak." candidates — M. Ferdinand Loppe, a well-lcnown figure in the students' quarter of Paris, who has been a candidate in every Presidential -electign for the 'last 20 years, and a radiologist, Dr. Edmond Bubois, a former Parliamentary candidate. Tke other candidates were M. Champetier Deribes (Movement Republican Populaire), M. Jules Gasser (Radical) and Mr. Michel Clemenceau. Soon after M. Blum arrived home from England, he and his caretaker French cabinet handed in their formal resignations. One of their last official acts was to receive the report on the situation in Indo-China:
