ACTOR GUILTY OF TREASON
LONDON, Jan. 16. The British actor, Anthony Gedric Steane, aged 52, was found guilty of tntering the serviee of the German hroadcasting systcm during the war and was sentenced to three years' penal servitude.. Steane said in evidence ihat he was i'orced to broadcast for the Germans hy their threats concerning . his iamilv. Iie received an average of (22 a week. Iie denied any intention of assisting the Germans and said that what ha did was done under duress^ When in May, 1941, he retused to broadcast he was beaten iqi hy three gestap'o men and had an ear almost toru off. The Judge said: "I think your action probahly had its source rather in ctwa rdice than in malice toward this country."
