The New Zealand crew of the Gambia, before the ship was handed back to the Royal Navy in 1946, following three years' service in the Royal New Zealand Navy, deeided that surplus canteen funds should be devoted to the purchase of somet'hing perpetuating the association between the Dominion and the colonies. An order was placed for a silver kiwi, which was manufactured in London, mounted on a wooden base. Mr. Creech-Jones expressed the Gambias' appreciation of the gift and said there would be keen competition among the school children for the trophy of a wingless bird, whic'h would excite more than iTSual curiosity. The presentation, coming at a time when the Colonial Office was about to implement plans for improved education, would give New Zealand a share in this development.
