RECOVERY BY R.S.A.

ANDREWS' UNFINISHED CENTURY In its first innings strike against Kahukura, at the Kuirau Domain on Saturday, R.S.A., after a disastrous start, compiled 209, I. Laurence making top score' of 74. Kahukura- has one run on for no wickets. With oue wicket down for no runs, two for 17, and three for 23, R.S.A. did not appear likely to compile Sufficient runs to stave cff defeat, but with a good innings by both R. Pringle and I. Laurence, the remaining batsmen's tasks were made very much easier. A very determined knock of three and a-quarter hours for 23 runs, by R. Pringle, was the deciding- factor. He treated every bowler wth great care at times, but he played the proper innings in'the circumstances. Throughout a tiring day, Kahukura's attack was steady, and its fielding good. With three down for 23, Laurence joined Pringle, and only at this stage did the batting improve from the spectators' point of view. Laurence, who is an aggressive bat, attaeked "the bowling from the outset with shots all round the wicket, and ran up his total of 74 in 50 minutes, before being claimed by R. Dixon, who had him caught at mid-off. Ihcluded in his total were nine fours and two sixes. Rose joined Pringle, and again the rate of scoring was slowed up for a time, but it livened when the fast attack was replaced with spin bowling. However, the fast scoring was short-lived, bo-th Pringle and Rose falling victims to W. Heley's spin. The remaining batsmen, M. Reid, C. Spedding, Ihaka and Bollen, continued the scoring, all reaching double figures before the innings closed for 209. Although a very good total for R.S.A. , the score is by no means beyond Kahukura, and the second day should provide good cricket. Details: — R.S.A. — First Innings R. Pringle, c. and b. Heley - 23 M.
