AGAINST ADVICE OF LEADERS

(Press Assn.-

DRIVERS' GRIEVANCES general public has * become annoyed

-Rec. 9.S0 p.m.)

LONDON, Jan. IX. Although there seems to be guieral appreciation that London transport drivers have lcgitimate grievances that re(p.iire redressing, the weight of public opinion supports the firm ? vatement by the Minister of I.abour, Mr. G. A. Isaacs, that llie men must return to work v - 'd abide by the deeision of the Road Haulage Control Wages Board. The general public has become heartily imtated by "unofficial" ■trikes which cause the averag'e man and woman in the street much incon- ' enicnce — inability to buy their full meat ration this week-end is no buighing matter for thc-usands of families. The strike has been called against the advice of union leaders. The possibiiity of its developing into something in the nature of a general strike, now that troops have been called in, is regarded as having a very unpleasant and unhealthy ring about it. Briefly, the position has arisen ! ecause three years have passed rince the transport drivers first •; -.ised their grievances and during .hat time nothing has been achieved. Nine months agc the position was considered byt tlie Road Haulage C entral Wages Board, which has now advertised proposed improved terms and conditions of payment. These are only proposals and will have. to be considered by district hoards before recc-mmendations are .'•nally submitted to the Minister of Gabour for a confirmatory order. The transport workers want a i working week of 44 hours, a reguj lated week, 14 days' holiday with | nay and an increased subsistence j allowance. They say that while they lmve a guaranteed week, they have j uot a guaranteed day. This means j Jhat they may have to wo-rk ten j -vmrs a day for four days and eight j iiours 011 the fifth day. They get i >n> oveutime for working ten hours. j They want a guaranteed working ! >iy of eight and a-half hours, as ! wi'll as a guaranteed week.
