MESSAGE IN BOTTLE FOUND ON BEACH
AUCKLAND, last night. Sc-rawled unevenly on a small slip of cardhoard, the following message was found in a ship's heer bottle on the beach at Islington Bay, Motatapu, in the Hauraki Gulf: "1940. Shipwreck. Will made. 29 Oxford Street, 'Sydney, Australia. M. Johnson. ' The cardhoard is apparently part of a cigarette packet. The cork of the bottle had, nearly rotted away. Whether the massage is a hoax or an echo of a wartime tragedy may be known following inquiries now being made in Australia.
