HAWAIIAN ISLANDS SWEPT BY STORMS
Waves 40 Feet High HONOLULV, January 6. The Hawaiian Islands have been. battered by a storm for the last 48 hours. Waves which reached a height of 40 feet have battered - shoreline areas leaving a trail of daniage reminiscent of that following the April tidal wave, which took a toll of 173 killed and 291 injured. The Piuumailo hosptal on Hilo was tlooded,' necessitatir.g its abandonrnent and the transfer of 200 tuberctilosis patients to the naval air station hospital. A lightbouse at Luapahoehoe, also on Hilo, was washed away. An Maui Island waves wrecked 1400 feet of brealcwater valued at £500,000, ren-' dering- Kahulului harbour nseless.
