PLUNKET SHIELD CRICKET
WELLINGTON, last night. Mxeeptional bowling by the Wanganui colt, H. B. Cave, followed by -ome of the best hatting seen at the Basin Reserve for years by C. S. Dempster, former international, as star, placed Wellington in a strong position in the Plunket Shield match ngainst Canterbury to-day on an apparently easy wicket, but with the ball coming through low at times. Canterbury was dismissed for 145 luns, Cave finishing with six wickets for 45 runs. With Dempster showing much of his old brilliamce, and Crawford g'iving a sparkling displav, Wellington consolidated its grip on the game by scoring 211 for flve wickets in its second innirgs at stumps. By compiling 349 runs in its first innings in reply to Otago's 153, Auckland has played itself into a commanding pcsition in the Plunket Shield match at Eden I'ark after two days' play. Otago in the second innings took 36 for the loss of no wickets.
