CHINESE FINED FOR IMPORTING OPIUM

Drug Valued at £1200 AUCKLAND, last night. One of the biggest hauls of opium ever made by the Auckland police was " ' "ured on Saturday night by Detective Sergeant B. Goldfinch and Detective A. J. Moore when they arrested two Chinese members of the crew of the Dutch tanker, Taria. This morning Lim Jit Wan (25), ship's boy, and Lim Fong (46), a steward, appeared before Mr. J. H. Luxford, S.M., on a charge of being found in possession of prepare'd onium. Lim Jit Wan was further charged with importing 21b. 2oz. of prepared opium into New Zealand- and Lim Fong with importing 31b. loz. of pi'epared opium. Senior Detective Trthewey, who j prosecuted, withdrew the first charge j against Lim Fong. Both aceused, for whom Mr. K. C. Aekins appeared, pleaded guilty. | Mr. Trethewey said that two police officers were on duty at Western Wharf at 7.30 on 'Satuixlay night when they saw the two Chinese leaving the ship. On being searched Wan was found in possession of 34 ounces of prepared opium. The opium, which was 'n sticks covered with paper, was drapped around his legs. Lim Fong- had 49 ounces of opium stieks concealed around his stomach and legs. A further pound -of opium was found in Fong's suitcase on board the ship, as well as £240 in New Zea1 land currency. It was apparent he j had' obtained this money since the j ship's arrival at Auckland. Mr. Trethewey said that the retail value of the opium seized was £1200. Mr. Aekins said Fong got the £240 in New Zealand money as the result of gambling at fan tan in Auckland. The magisfcrate said the importation of opium into New Zealand, which happened quite frequently, was a very serious offence. On the charge of importing opium Lim Jit Wan and Lim Fong were each fined £200, in default three months' imprisonment. The minimum pena-lty, a fine of £25, was imposed on Lim Jit Wan. for feeing found in possession of prepared opium. An order for the forfeiture of the opium was made.
