RARE RHINOCEROS IN CAPTIVITY
The only white rhinoceros in captivity is now on its way by special road ti'ansport to Pretoria Z'oo frorn the Zululand Game Reserve where it was found wanderirig, apparently deserted by. its mother. Though only a week old, it is worth more thaii £1009, as it belongs to the second rarest specres of living animals (the first is the Q,kapi). The white or Burchel's rhinoceros is a specieS now almost extinct. It is thoUght that the end of last cexxtury there were only half a dozen in existence. ! This rhinoceros is known to havt reached 6£ft. in height at the should.er, and a length of 14ft. 'Its range was always limited, and apparently never extended north of the Zamhesi, largely due to the creature's grass-eating habits. ' j Only one or two skeltons and skins have ever 'been brought to England. • The white rhino, strictly speaking, is not whxte, 'but has a slate grey hide like other rhinos. Unlike other African species, it accumulates much edible fat. Its flesh is said to have been of excellent quality, somewhat resembling heef. The flesh of the calf has been compared with very tehder veal. . ' • • .
