WAGE INCREASE FOR TIMBER WORKERS
\ New Awar.d Ratified J AUCKLAND, Last Night. Provision for an increase of 3 d an hour for timber workers employed on an hourly basis and for a weekly increase of 10s for those paid by the week is contained in a new award for the New Zealand Timber Workers' Union. Advice that the award had been ratified by the Arbitration Court was received by the union's national secretary, Mr. F. Craig, this morning. The isolation allowance for bush sawmill workers in indigenous undertakings has been increased from 2id to 3?i^ an hour and for other workers, including those in exotic forests, from lid to 2£d. Youths employed under the town schedule have"-t their wages increased by 5s a week and those under the bush and mill section of the award by ls 4d a day. Women workers get 5s more a week. Mr. Craig said it was reasonable to assume that the major reason for the increases was the nnion's claim that although there were fewer men in the industry, they were working much harder. The new award cfovers all Dominion timber workers, exceptthose in Nelson, Marlborough and Westland. The award takes effect from February 1, 1947.
