Australia Venture May Be Race Against Time
CANBERRA, December 23. Now that the Australian Antarctic expedition has 'been decided on, a short reconnaissance voyage -planned for this summer may develop- into a race against time, aceofding to a statement by an inter-departmental eommittee memher. Already the season is rather advanced, and for a winter .-voyage a specially conditioned ship would be necessary. The possibilities of exploiting the coal deposits which are known to exist in Antarctica would he one of the investigations undertaken by the expedition. Scientists will exp'lore the .possibilities of using the coal in conjunction with metals which they hope to find in the area.
