Hawke's Bay Fruit .Crops j It is estimated that the Hawke's Bay apple crop this season will yield ; 435,000 bushel cases, eompared with an actual overall harvest last season of 839,500 cases. Pears are expected to yield 150,000 cases, eompared with 103,200 aetually marketed last season. The stone fruit crop will he a good deal lighter than last season. Peaclies ai*e estimated to yield 60,000 bushel cases, nectarines 4000 cases, plums 30,00 cases, and apricots 300 cases. The yield of quinces is placed at 7000 cases. The deeline in production is due to the effects of Octoher frosts. ; Petrol for Holiday Period While there were adequate supplies of motor spirit to meet all requirements, it was in the interests of New Zealand and the British Empire that motorists should not be wasteful in the use of it, said the Commissioner of Transport. He had been asked to comment on the petrol situation over Christmas and the New Year. By ararngement with the British Government, New Zealand supplies were still on a basis of a monthly quota, he said, and any quantities of petrol saved during the months of smaller cons'umption went to meet the increased demand during the holiday period. Railway Operating Costs e An operating loss of £190,989 is sho*\vn in the railway finances from April 4 to November 9 of this year. Expenditure amounted to £9,454,295 and revenue to £9,263,306. All railway services were run "at a loss. North Island main line, and branehes showed an operating loss of £124,836. South Island main line and branehes a loss oi £351,610, and the Nelson line a loss of £15,383, malcing a total railway operating loss of £491,829. From miscellaneous and subsidiary services, however, the net revenue was £300,840. The overall operating loss for the four-weekly period ended November 9 was £109,957.
