BRITISH BREAD RATION SITUATION IMPROVES
LONDON, December 18. It is now reported from Washingtcn that the cut in grain shipments to London may not affect the bread ration after all. The British Food Minister, . Mr. Strachey, is due in Bermuda on his way by plane to Wash'ington. The Food Ministry iir London says it is unable to confirm or deny these . reports or the suggestion that Mr. Strachey is going to Washington to discuss the reduction in the January allocation of grain to Britain. First reports about this reduction indicated that it might mean a further cut in the bread ration in Britain, but the latest message from Washington says the British officials are hopeful that this will not be necessary. The United States Government is said to have 'given Britain a measure of reassuranee and it is understood that in ' addition to the grain that his been .promised a substantial amount of flour will be sent. The chief of the British food mission in Washington is quoted as saying "Things don't look as bad as we first thought." A later message states that it has just been announced in London that the Food Minister will leave for the United States at mid-night. He was to have left by plane yesterday, but his trip was postponed foa* 24 hours.
