BRITISH PURCHASE OF GRAIN AND FLOUR
Very Grave Emergency Has Been Averted LONDON, December 18. In the House of Commons this afternoon, thi Minister of Food, Mr. Strachey, announced that America had given Britain permission to buy and export 68,000 tons of wheat and 36,000 tons of wheat floiur between now and January 31. This, added to cxisting supplies, would be just onough to avert the "very grave emergency" Which the Government had foreseen for the end of January. Mr. Strachey said that a small quantity of coarse grains would be added and a rail priority for the movement across America of additional quantities of Canadian wheat had been promised. He added: "The supplies are by no means as large as we wanted to puxchawe in America, but they represent a big effort by the United States Government to meet us, despite the very real difficulties it is facing to-day." Earlier the Minister told Eeuter Lhat an aircraft had been standing by for seven or 10 days to take him to America, but he might not have to g'o.
