WINTRY CONDITIONS IN ENGLAND
LONDON, Deeember 17. Bittei'ly ccld winds from Russia brought snow, frost, ice and a record power cut to England. Snow fell in east and south-east iEngland and the Midlands, and mox'e is expeeted. London's night temperature of 26 degrees was the lowest sixice January 21. Snowflalces swixded rouxrd London morning rush hour crowds. Kent, Weald axxd East Sussex had nine inches of sxiow. -The roads were diffieult, and many huses were icebound. Floods in the Rother Valely and •the Romney Marshes froze over. ■Southei'n railway points froze and would not change in some places, resulting in many trains being delayed. All England and Wlales was involved in the electricity cut, which was five per cent. in north-east Eng10 per cent. in the xiox*th-west, and 15 per cent. in the rest of the courxtry. 1 Gale warning-s have been issued for sea areas. The Home Secretary, Mr. Chuter Ede, was anxong the easualties of the bitter weather. He fell on his nose when he slipped on an icy patli while staying with Mr. and Mrs. Attlee at Chequers.
