MASTERTON NO-LICENSE CEASES FEBRUARY 28
MASTERTON, Last Night. The Masterton no-licence district will officially cease to exist on February 28, 1947. This is in aceord- «= nce with section 9 of the Licensing Amendpient Act, 1910, which provides: "The carrying of restoration sliall come into f'orce on the expiration of the three months following the day of the general •electiou." "The Licensing Act, 1908, lays -down that the election of the licensing committee shall be taken on tbe second Tuesday in March, in this ease March 11, 1947. The election is to be conducted in the same manner as elections o'f members of Parliament. The Electoral Act stipulates that nominations for the election must be made not earlier than seventeen days, or later than ten days before the election. This means that unless the elosing date for nominations is set between February 28 and March 1, no resident of the Masterton no-licence district will be eligible for either the Wairarapa or the Pahiatua licensing committees, since till February 2S they will he residents of a nolicence district. The date set for' the next meeting of loeal bodies in the no-licence district, January 30, will leave little time for the proposed public meetings, if the resolutions expeeted from it are to he acted upon before the election of the licensing committees.
