Battlefields For Sale
The battlefield of Waterloo is for sale as part of the historic Hougouanont estate, comprising 50,000 acres of parlc and farm land. Jt is interesting to recall that the Battle of Waterloo, fought in 1815, cost Wellington's army 15,000 killed — 2000 more than the Battle of E1 Alamein cost the Eighth Army. ■ Part of the Haugo/uunont estate, near a ridge where British Guards repulsed Napoleon's^avalry, has been reserved in perpetuity by the Belgian Government. The rubble and ruins of north-east Caen, scene of more recent battles, has just e-merged from under the auctioneer's hammer. The -Caen City •Council has bougftt the shell-shattered groun-d fi-om a group of lan-downers for rehousing pjurposes. 1 Battlefield3; seem to be popular ".buys." Another which was for sale reqelntly was in; Arakan, where a tim-ber company bought land which three years ago was the scene' of desperate* fi"'htin-g against the Japanese. In the saies contracts war eemetery sites are reserved from commercial use.
