SMUTS ASSURES GREECE OF BRITAIN'S AID
LONDON, Dee^ 18. General Smuts, speaking in Athens, has told the Greek people that the British would never desert them. He said that,. despite heavy reverses during the wai*, Britain had not abandoned them then and they would not abandon them now. II e * is due to leave Athens to-day after his three-day visit. Greek rebel leaders in Macedonia say they have sent a memorandum to Britain, the United States and Russia, urging that an international commission should visit the area in which there have been clashe's witlj the Greek Governm_ent. The mwnoranduni calls for the immediate evacuation of British troops, the formation of a democratic people 's party, and finally, a new' election on the morarcliy without supervision by a foreign commission. A guerilla spokesman said that civil wai* would go on until British troops are evacuated and a general political amnesty instituted. He denied that the guerillas were fighting for the Communists in Macedonia with foreign arms.
