PARIS, Dec.- 13. The National Assembly elected M. LeoiuBlum, Socialist Party leader, PrimFMinister of France. He received 575 votes out of a total of 590 cast. Earlier the Socialist Party announced that M. Blum, yielding to party pressure, had agreed, to lead a caretaker - Government of National Union if no other candidate was fofthcoming. Before M. BlunTs candidature came hefPre the National Assembly, there were last-minute ' inter-party -discussions. The M.R.P. (Progressive Catholie Party), led hy the retiring Prime Ministei*, M. Bidault, -decided not to oppose. the candidature. In standing for the office of Prime Minister the veteran politician, M. Bliim, ignored his doetor's adviee, says the .Daily Telegraph correspondent in 'Paris. He was^- pressed to do so because the Socialists, who had been asked by the Communists to nominate a "candidate, decided that he was the only man with the needed prestige to obtain a majority. M. Blum, the correspondent adds, still suffers from the effects of internment by the Vichy Government and the Germans. He said he would stand only if all approved of his selection. Immediately after the vote had been tak-en, M. Blum. ibegan -discussions with leaders of other parties on the formation of a Government.
