South Africa Grateful To Sir Carl Berendsen
NEW YORK, Dec. 12. Members of South Africa's delegation to thd United Nations are grateful to Sir Carl Berendsen (New. Zealand), who made a forceful speech urging that the InternationaF Court should be asked to decide whether South Africa's treatment of Indians was a subject of pui*ely domestic concern. The- speech was made when the United Nations Assembly's resolution, which in effect asked South Africa to improve her treatment of the Indians in accordanee with her international obligations, was being discussed. The resolution was passed by 32 votes to 15, which was just sufficient for the requisite two-thirds maijority of members voting. The South Africans expressed surprise that Australia abstained from voting and pointed out that her vote on their side would have ensured the resolution's rejection. America, Britain, New Zealand and Canada voted against the resolution.
