STRUCK BY LIGHTNING FIRE CAUSED IN WAIRARAPA POWER BOARD STATION A SHORT CIRCUIT •

Masterton, Friday. Extensive damage was done at the Wairarapa Electric Power Board's station at Kourarau by fire following an explosion when an underground cable was struck by lightning. Insulation damage and a short circuit occured. which set fire to all the underground cable. When the full load was put on the short circuit travelled back to the control panels fusing the controls and setting fire to the instruments, transformers and switchboard controls. On hearing the explosion the engineer in charge rushed into the station which he found a mass of flames. He was hampered by dense black, sulphureous smoke from the burning copper and bitumen. Until ths cleared in about five to ten minutes it was impossible to do anything. The eugineer by the aid of extinguishers evetually mastered the flames but not before considerable damage had been done. Re pairs have now been effected.
