FUTILITY.
— Arthur
Guxterman.
"We strolled beneath the orchard boughs, Through meadow grasses lush and deep; And there were cows and cows and cows, And lilcewishe sheep and sheep and sheep. "Ho sighed, 'This world's a fleeting show; Our empty lives have no excuse; We strive and toil; we come and go; And where's the good and what's the use!" "And still beside the purling stream, In care of doughty ram and bull, The cows went right ori brewing cream, The sheep went right on sprouting ! wool. "I groaned, 'I lcnow the way you feel; j We just drag on till something j stops ; i And still the calves keep making | veal, ! And still the lambs keep growing j chops. "We're tossed about like bits of cork, j Or ocean wefed, or empty kegs; I And still the pigs kee adding pork, I And still the hens keep laying eggs, j "And still the bears keep raising ; fur j And still the bees keep worlcing ; too. I don't know why these things occur, ! And yet I'm sometimes glad they do."
