Following a long spell of dry weather, heavy showers of rain which fell throughout the district on Wlednesday night and yes'terday moriing, j proved of considerahle •benefi.t to pag- | tures and gardens. Motorists repo'rt very heavy falls when travelling be- | tween Rotorua and Opotiki yesterday morning. 'Spout Bath Hours In order to provide additional facilities for visitors and residents, the hours during which the popular Spout Baths at Whakarewarewa are open to the public have recently been ex'tended. In addition to the usual hours during the morning and after-. noon, the baths are now also open ■between 7.30 and 9.30 ea'ch-evening. Ulm's Arrival Although little definite information is available it is understood that the aeroplane, "Faith in Australia," piloted by Flight-Lieutenant C. T. P. Ulm, will land on Mr. R. C. Smith's Sproperty, Te Ngae, at about 2.30 on ■ Saturday afternoon. The aeroplane will remain in Rotorua until the morning of Wednesday, December 27. Claim on Council ■ The Opotiki Borough Council or. Tuesday night received a letter from solici'tors acting on behalf of Mr. Chas. H. Fleming,' the former town clerk, giving notice that unless the sum of £115 17s 6d is paid within one month proceeding-s will be taken against the council. The claim is for eommission on work which Mr. Fleming asserts he designed or supervised, amounting to over £3000. On the motion. of Mr. A. Anderson, the council decided to offer, through its solicitors, £20 in full settlement of the claim, without prejudice. Xmas Shopping The first of the real Christmas rush made itself appreciably felt in Rotorua yesterd'ay when the town was thronged all day with crowds of busy shoppers. It was "payday" with a large number of men on the Maori land schemes while the wet weather which prevented more than ordinary work on the farms gave the farming' community an opportunity to earry out its Christmas shopping. All Rotorua shops report good business during the week and it is some time since the optimistic feeling at present prevailing has been felt in the town. Swimming Carnival The Rotorua Swimming Club has been favoured with exceptionally good entries for its carnival meeting in 'the Blue Bath on Thursday next. Swimmers from all the main centres of the North Island will be in action and it will be interesting to see how they shape against W. Wihareaitu, th'e local Maori boy who, good as he was last year, has improved very considerably already this year. The hox plans for reservations will be available shortly and in'tending competitors are reminded that all nominations close to-night with Mr. Len Fisher, Fenton Street. Fast Shearing A world's record is claimed for the performance of Percy de Malmanche, a Pihama (Taranaki) farmer, who shore 412 sheep in ten hours one day last week under the supervision of a Justice of the Peace. The sheep were average Romney breeding ewes, and it is stated that they were well shorn. In 1923' W. Higgins shore 406 sheep in nine hours at Maumahaki. De Malmanche had the sheep eaught for him and had put up some big' tallies in preparing for his attack on the record. Last week a gang of four in a woolshed in the Marton district shore 1169 ewes and lambs in a day, an average .per man of just over 292. Sporting and Dramatic Most entertaining and with a holiday atmosphere is this week's issue of the New Zealand Sporting and Dramatic, which should make an acceptable gift for Christmas. A striking feature is the double page devoted to the staffs of the Auckland Pdst OfRce, represented in splendid photographs of the members of the various departments. The Waipa 1 Racing Club's meeting at Te Awamutu will be of special interest to racegoers. Other pictures given generous space are scenes at the Parnell Baths, views of Jasper National Park (Canada), Jubilee of Christ Church (Ellerslie), Mt.- Albert Section of Auckland Ambulance Division, the Harbutt-Fraser wedding, St. Andrew's Pipe Band, Hollywood stars in recreation and rural scenes. A magnificently coloured supplement of Carter the Great makes a valuable souvenir for the art collector.
