GIRL GUIDES

"FLYING-UP" CEREMONY. The Guides and Brownies of Rotorua and Wihaka met last Saturday afternoon in the Sunday School at St. Luke's Church, in order to celebrate ithe enrolment of new guides and Ibrownies. also, the "flying-up" of the brownies who had passed the required number of tests to become first-class guides. The afternoon opened with the guides and brownies falling into .horseshoe formation, after which Sister Mitchell presented the brownies with a handsome big brown owl which she had brought back from England. ' Patrol Leader Stella Jones then presented her reeruit guides to be enrolled. This duty performed, P.L. Alison McKenzie followed, presenting her recruits. After this ceremqny, the guides and brownies from both Whaka and Rotorua were brought under the influence of guides by itheir enrolment. lFollowing this, the most anticipated feature of the afternoon was performed — ithe "flying up." The brownies formed a circle in the room wdth the two girls who were to "fly 'up" in the centre, whHe the guides fell into paJtrnls at the oposdte end of the room. Commissioner E. J. Harris addressed the two girls, telling them that what they had learnt in the brownies was only the beginr ning of what they were to learn ii? the guides. She comcluded her remarks iby conducting them to the guides, who welcomed the two new onembers joyously. The presentation of . decorations to Patrol Leaders Alison, McKenzie and Stella Jones, also to the Patrol Seconds Alma Bullin and Lily Allen, 'was then performed by Commissioner E. J. Harris. An einjoyafble aftejrnoon tea was served by the guides and the afternoon was concluded with a game for the brownies and the singing of "Taps" by the guides. Ladies present were: Mesdaanes Goodyear, Bullin? Tanner, Jories, McLean, Dansey, Hay, and Sister Mitchell.
