TOURIST CRUISES

big ships coming cunard and matson lines both sending vessels DUE IN FEBRUARY

The Cunard and the Matson Lines are both running tourist cr'uises in the New Year, on liners which will call at Auckland. The Cunarder Franconia is a sister ship to the Carinthia, which called here last summer, a'nd the Matson liner Lurline has also been here before. Both will he in port within a few days of each other. The Franconia is to leave Nevr York 011 January 9, and arrives at Auckland on February 21. She was here in 1927 in the course of a previous- world tour. The cruise has been arranged by Messrs. Thomas Cook and Sons' tourist agency. The Franconia will be at Auckland from February 21 to 24. There will be excursions to Rotorua, Taupo, Waitomo Caves and the deep-sea fishing grounds of the Far North', as well as sightseeing trips to places of interest in the vicinity of Auckland. Arrangements are being made for a number of passengers to travel through the North Island, visiting the famous seenic resorts and rejoining the liner at Wellington before her departure for Sydney on February 26." --The liner will then visit the Orient, South Africa and South America. The Lurline will arrive at Auckland on February 9, and will.make a stay in port of two and a half days before leaving- for Sydney. She is the laterst Matson liner, a sister ship to the Monterey and Mariposa, anoi visited Auckland on her maidefi voyage last February, when she made an extended cruise in the Pacific. The Lurline is not making a ronnd the world cruise, but is visiting piincipally the islands of the Pacific, New Zealand, Australia, New Guinea and the Far East. During, her stay in , Auckland tours to the chief scenic resorts will be arranged by the Government Tourist Department.
