wqql prices f1rm WjOIOL AT TIMARU OPENS UP IN VERY GOOD CONDITION KEEN BUYING
-By Telegraph — Ccpyrlght).
Timaru, Saturday. The opinion of all concerned is ,that the first wopl sale of the season. in South Caniterbu'ry was a splendid one from all points of view.' It was felt,, prior to the sale, that prices would be firm on the receiit auction at Christchurch and ,this proved correct, pric.es eventually being at par to a farthing dearer when compaf ed with tbe northern auction. Growers have been favoured with a fairly good season and it was anticipated that the wool would open up in fairly good condition. This also proved to be the case, the majorlty of the clip being, freer from dust than that offered at the Christchurch sale. The wool w.as sound and well-balanced, but the opinion of some was that perhaps half •the quantity was coarser than that offered- here last season. This is accounted for by the weather experienced here in recent months; •The bench of ibuyers was fully representative and the competition throughout was keen. Hardly a clip was heglected. Most of the competition -came from . the Continent with Japan more in ,the market than at preyibus saies held in this centre. Continental buyers went after flesce wool freely with France taking pieces often at extreme prices. ( Bradford representatives were fairly quiet though they made th-eir presence felt when lots suitable to their
requiremen.ts came under the hammer. The Doniinion mills a-lso entered the market for suitable offerings. In ■the first four catalogues, passings were conspicuous by their absence and though, in the final eatalogue, prices failed to reach growers' reserves, in a few instancps, the total passings AVere practically negligible.
