The trial of George Edward James, an engiiie-driver, aged 57, dn a charge of ha.ving murdered Mrs. Cecilia Smith, a widow, in a flat in -Ohiro Road, Wellington, on June 30, was concluded in the Supreine Cour't at Wellington before the Chief JUstice, Sir Michael Myers, on Novemeber 15. On their fourth return to the court following their original retirement, the jury returned a verdict of guilty. witli a strong* recoiiimendation to mercy. The chief justiee pronouneed sentence of death.
