rotorua carnival AUSTRALIAN LADIES APPEAR AT BLUE BATHS LAST EVENING FINE DEMON STRATIONS The popularity of swimming caraiivals with the Rotorua public vfas again shown last evening. when. the Blue Baths were packed with spectators for the first carnival of the season held by the Rotorua Amateur Swimming Cluh. The visit of the two lady swimmers, Miss Frances Bulib (British Empire free style champion) and Miss Claire Dennis (world breiast stroke champio.n.) added attraction to the programme and the visitors received a great ovation. Introducing the visiting lady swimmers, the president of the cluh, M'r. W. L. (Riichards, said he was pleased to welcome two lady swimmers who had miade swimming history throughout the world. They also had with them Mrs. W'. Chamhers their popular chaperone and it was pleasing- to have them in Rotorua. As far as Rotorua was concerned swimming was in its infaney, but it was gratifying to see that after only a year of existence it could attract such famous swimmers. The swimming world in New Zealand owed a debt of gratitude to th'& Waitemata Swimming Cluh who at considerahle finiancial cost had sponsored the tour. Responding, Mrs. Chamhers thank- ; ed those present for the wondeNu! welcome extended to them. They had looked forward to their visit to Rotorua and had not been disappointed. Rotorua had a wonderful bath which was unequalled in Australia or New Zealand and the district had also produced some very fine swimmers. She hoped that at some later date Rotorua swimmers would visit Australia. Mr. W. Kenny, of the Waitemata club, lalso paid a tribute to the Blue Baths as a swimming bath but said that unfortunately it was badly lacking in accommodation. The visiting swimmers had had a wonderful influence on swimming since their arrival and would further benefit the sport before their departure. Miss Bult in Action On their appearance for the 100yds invitation race hoth Miss Bult and W. Wihareaitu received considerahle applause from the crowded hathside. • The pair swam level with each other most of the way, a f ea; ture being the improvement in "Wlhareaitu's turn. Over the final lap Whareaitu drew ahead and won hy a foot in 67sec. Miss Bult created much interest by her fiast under-water turn and her easy action. Paced hy H. Wilkinson and Miss J. Greig (free style), Miss Dennis gave a fine demonstration of breaststroke swimming in a 100 yards invitation race. From the start (when she swam under water for some distance) she fox-ged ahead with a powerful stroke which she maintained to the finish to win in lmin 19 3-5sec. The improvement shown by W:. Whareaitu over 100 yards was a feature of his swimming as also was his faster turn. In the 100 yards ehampionship he broke his own cluh record hy 3-5sec and later in a handicap event estahlished his best time of 60 seconds for the distance from scratch. At the conclusion of the programme Misses Bult and Dennis gave a number of exhibitions of various methods of swimming and an exhibition polo match by lady members of the Rotorua Club completed a very interesting programme.
