THIS WEEK'S POSITIONS IN THE VARIOUS COMPETITIONS HANDICAP TOURNAMENT C .q-npm dIIv wri-hf-.pn fnr the "Mornine*

The results of the first round 'so far handed in are: Heywood beat Bould (P), Roland beat Mulligan (R), Fraer beat Watt (R), Saxby beat Rowley (R), Walker (P) beat Clark. It is pleasing to note that two new members, S. Walker, and L. Watt, are taking part in this tourney. Both play a fair game, and with further experience should develop into strong players. Draw for* the Second Round. Section A: — Fraer v. Jenkins (R), Kurney v. Bailey R), Tibbitts v. Walker (Kt), Blencowe (P) v. Clark, Evans (P) v. Jackson, W. Heley (P) v. Watson, Tattersall v. Watt (Kt.). Section B: — Saxby v. Shaw (R), Roland v. Rowley (R) , Vinall v. Mulligan (R), Dixon (P) v. Heywood, Bould (P) v. Edwards, Musgrave (P) V. W. Heley. Burton a bye. (P) opponent concedes pawn and move, (Kt) opponent concedes knight and (R) opponent concedes rook. Players mentioned first have the move. The second round will be played on Friday, December 8th, at 7.30 p.m. in the Club Rooten, Citizen's Club, Tutanekai Street. Next Friday evening will he devoted to ladder games. Ladder Game Results. Jackson beat Kurney (2 — 0), a very fine effort on Jackson's part, and takes second place on the ladder. Burton beat Tibbitts (2 — 0) and remains at the top. Tibbitts beat Jackson (2 — 1) and retains second place. The Bledlsloe Cup. A letter received from F. K. Kelling, the local club's delegate on tbe Cormcil of the N.Z. Chess Association indicated that the Wellington Clubs were in favour of this trophy being allocated to the Club Championship of New Zealand. The local match committee is of the same opinion. The Rotorua Club, as a minor club, has one delegate on the Council, and is eligible to compete in the Club Championship, but members must remember that the telegraphic matches are 20 boards a side. A stiff proposition, but we can do it. "Knights Before Bishops"
Tbe great masters oiren wrne "Knights before bishops" or \yords to that effect, and many players wonder why. The following reasons may be given. In the opening quick development is of paramount importance, and the knight in its original position obstructs the most; they are usually best situated on B. 3 as from there they get a good grip on the centre, i.e., "control the centre;" and lastly, the bishops can usually be moved to two or more good squares, and by moving the knights first the bishops are left free to be moved to the most suitable square according to how the opening goes, i.e. "reserve the greater option." Remember, as far as possible in the opening, no piece should be moved twice before another piece has moved once. This Week's Problem. Position: K7, P6Q, 8, 8, 8, 8, P6P, K6R. Checlc position: White, K on QR1, R on KR1, Q on KR7, P on QR7. Black, K on QR1, pawns on KR8 and QR8. White to mate in 3 moves. This is a very neat "miniature" problem by P. H. Williams, and was solved, by the way, by a local player in under half a minute. Answer to Last Week's Problem. White wins as follows: 1K-Q7, K-Ktl; 2K-K7, K-Rl; 3P-B6, P x P; 4K-B7, P-B4; 5P1K7 ch; K1R2; 6PKt8 (Q) ch., and wins. If White plays 1P-B6, Black draws by lK-Ktl. P x P would lose for blaclc. Acknowled'gements. Cuttings and contributions from F.K.K., and P.H.W., Wellington, and E.F.T., and A.H.F., Rotorua.
