TROTTING CLUB

L. C.

RYAN,

ANNUAL REPORT TO BE PRESENTED TO-NIGHT FIRST YEAR'S ACTIYITIES The first annual report of the president of the Rotorua Trotting Club (Mr. L. C. Ryan) to be presented at to-night's annual meeting of the elub is as follows: — Your executive has pleasute in submitting to you the first" annual report ,of the club. For the purpose of determining a date 4 for closing accounts this year pending the adoption of governing rules, such has been fixed as the 30th of Septexnber. The period under review has been a somewhat awkward one owing to the establishment of the club which was decided upon after several preliminary meetings by enthusiastic followers of the sport. Ultimately registration was applied for and' granted by certificate from the New Zealand Trotting Association dated 17th of August, 1932. A provisional executive was established and earried on up to the 4th of April, 1933, when a general meeting of members and supporters was held at which the election of executive officers was officially determined. For the information of the members the personnel was as follows: — Patron, C. H. Clinkard, Esq., M.P. ; Vice-Patron, His Worship the Mayor, Mr. Thos. Jackson; President, Mr. L. C. Ryan; Vice-President, Mr. L. Crawford Watson; Treasurer, Mr. C. W. B. Griffiths. Executive Committee: Messrs. F. S. Boyes, C. A. Clarlce, D. Cambie, C. S. Dalg'leish, J. Deacon, E. G. Fraser, W. Galbraith, E. G. Guy, F. Goodson, C. Griffiths, J. H. Greenland, E. E. Harvey, T. Jackson, - P. Kinninmont, E. A. Meredith, L. C. Ryan, E. Roe, R. P. Spedding, G. Urquhart, L. Crawford Watson and Drs. H. Bertram and S. H. Hay. Prior to the election of the official executive the provisional executive had proceeded and secured permission for a racing date for a meeting fixture, prepared a programme and made all tentative arrangements for the proposed carrying out of the fixture to be held in Rotorua on May 20th. It was unfortunate that a totalisator permit could not be secured for the club's initial -fixture; the official executive on taking office decided to carry on with all arrangements made, the race meeting eventually taking place -on the date applied for, as a non-totalisator meet-

ing. The stake-money (for the seven events programmed) provided for cash pi'ixes amounting to £150, in addition a number of valuable trophies were donated. To the respective donors grateful thanks and appreciation has been extended. The Rotorua Racing Club very generously granted the Trotting Club the use of its course and appointments for the meeting free of charge, the Ai^awa Park Domain Board also giving the Park lands gratis. We ask you to join us in extending thanks to the bodies in question, the lcindly actions largely contributing to what may be generally claimed a successful fixture. Good fortune prevailed with fine weather for the meeting and horse owners and trainers were unstinted in support to the club's initial effort. Financially the actual race meeting returns show a loss of £4i/14/4, however, the handsome response for membership enrolment totalled 201, together with the officers acting in honorary capacities permitted the extension of the funds sufficiently to allow a credit balance of £35/9/10 to be earried forward. Included in such amount^ is £24/19/10 in actual cash. Application has been made for a racing date for the coming year and May 14th has been officially granted to the club. Whether the fixture will be favoured with a totalisator permit the committee are not able to direct, but it is sincerely trusted such will be the case and with a permit it is argued that your club would have a most successful year. In the opinion of ,your retiring executive the whole question of ultimate success or failure hinges on such aspect. Rules. — During the year ^ your executive went into the question of and prepared draft rules. Procedure to adopt same has been delayed in the meanwhile. For the purpose of electing officers for the coming year, it is suggested that the ordinary method may be followed and all officers be elected from the meeting by the meeting, the retiring officers having all signified their willingness to be nominated again for office sliould members so elect. In conclusicn I ask you to join with me in extending thanks to all those who have so ably assisted throughout the year to enhanee the interest of the club. Special mention is deserving to Mr. E. La Trobe Hill, for his invaluable services as Secretary in which he has acted in an honorary capacity throughout the period. The local press are also deserving of special mention for the amount of space and publicity given. Happy and eordial relations have always existed in the executive tending to malce my position as President to vou a pleasure to fulfill.

Presiaent. Rotorua, 11/10/33.
