ROTORUA SEASON TWO AUSTRALIAN LADIES AT FIRST CARNIVAL NEXT MONTH. \ ' " COMPETITORS IN TRAINING
(By
Like our semi-aquatic friend the frog, the Rotorua Amateur Swimming Cl'ub has lain dormant for the winter, but will come forth" to open its swimming season on December 13, at 8 p.m., when Australia's two premier lady swimmers will make their appearance. Better talent than the "A'ussie" ladies one could not wish for, and the opening carnival promises to eclipse all previous ones, which have been thoroughly enjoyed by a satisfied public. Miss Claire Dennis is the Olympic, Austijalian and New South Wales breaststroke champion and holds the World's record for the 100 metres, which she accomplished in 84 3-5sec. She will be paced in the invitation race by Harry Wilkinson, and "Splash" offers some good advice to Harry to get into hard training at once. Miss Francies Bult is in no way overshadowed by her brilliant teammate as she also is a record holder. Miss Bult won the Australian free style championship for 100 and 220 yards, came second in the 220 yards backstroke championship, won the championship of Victoria for the 50, 100, 220 and 440 yards, and is the holder of the Australian records for 100 yards in 62 3-5sec., 220 yards in 2 42 2-5sec., and 200 metres in 2 42 2-5sec. W. Whareaitu, the holder of the New Zealand record for 50 yards, will be pitted against Miss Bult and a good race should ensue; there is a difference of approximately 3 seeonds in the respective swimmers times. Girl's Water Polo. "Splash" is overjoyed at the progress made by the water polo girls under the capable coaching of the club's popular and efficient' coach, J. B. Perrin. Jack does not take all the credit to himself as the girls are very keen, and unless the coach has the co-operation of his pupils and their willingness to learn, then he has a very difficuR task before him. These girls are so enthusiastic that a special exhibition of water polo (with no rough tactics) will be staged on the night of the carnival. The club can think itself very fortunate in having such a valuable cup presented for water polo (ladies) by Sir Louis Greig, K.B.E., London. It is owing to tbe interest taken in swimming by his neice, Miss Jean Greig, that this very handsome trophy has come into the club's possession. It is for annual .ompetition for ladies' water polo, open to all clubs in New Zealand, and "Splash" is pleased to say this annual event will take place in Rotorua under the control of the R.A.S.C., which will be the first club to have its name engraved on this coveted trophy. Work hard girls and have the Rotorua Club's name first on the honours list. The first distance (33 l-3yds) for the ladies' club championship will he decided at the opening carnival, and "Splash" would not be surprised to see a change in the order of placing this season. Mattie Mitchell will have to look to her laurels as Jean Greig, Moira Williamson and Joan Ford are all swimming well. It is rumoured that the first tw.o named are lapping in 22 seconds. Very good. A pleasing feature this season is the increase in membership, which is already approximately 50 per cent. smore than last season. The fee is only 2/6 for seniors and a few (a very few) of the business people support this fine healthy recreation. It must be remembered that the officials give a lot of time to f oster the sport and have to rely on subscriptions and proceeds from swimming carnivals to carry on. All trophies are provided out of the club's funds. Now "Splash" will tell you a big secret, the expenses for the coming carnival (which include hire of bath, trophies and travelling exenses for the "Aussies") will be in the vicinity of £33. A lot of money isn't it for only 21 hours. Now here is another secret, Mr. Gresham the treasurer and Mr. Fisher the club captain will issue members tickets for the small sum of 2/6. Join up and support this fine clean sport. Small or large donations will also he thankfully received.
