EARLY ROTORUA
CLIPPINGS. FROM "THE CHRONICLE." August 21, 1897.— The three areas of ground at Whakarewarewa selected by Mr. Mjueller when here the other day as appropriate sites for the propagation of various classes of usefxil timber have now been burned ■off, and a party of Natives are now •engaged in clearxng and pl'oughing the same. The fencing of these bliocks is being carried' out by a party of Europeans. The trees will •be planted by day labour by m«n used to the woi'k, as considerable care will require to be taken so as to ensure good results. On this work and that to be proceaded with at Waiotapu •and the Galatea Road, a sum of £50fCi will he spent in equal proportions. The area of 50 acres on the TaupoNapier Road, near the Rangitaiki, on which the seeds of various species of = .gum-trees will be sown, will entail an expen-diture of about £250. August 21, 1897. — A dispute has arisen amongst the Natives of Ohaki, near the orossing of the Waikato River, on the new rioad to this place via Waiotapu. The misunderstanding arose over the ownership of the land near the river, ,and as to wihere the punt or bridge is to be placed. Reports state that fhrearms are in evidence by the opposing parties, but n'o shots, save one in the aix*, have as yet been fired. Our local consltahle is seeing to the matter in the interests ,of peace, which is almost sure to prevail, as life is very sweet even to the warlike aboriginal.
