GAMEKEEPERS WHO DID REALLY W$LtlN H BUSINESS, Kin'g George's head gamekeeper at fWiindsor, the late Edward Dadley, died recently, leaving an estate valued at £1680. That sum seems a trifie when contrasted with the fortune left. by the late head gamekeeper to the ' Duke of Buccleuch, which amounted to £42,000. Several other head game- , keepers to noblemen with' famous ' "shoots" have left their heirs more than moderately well off. '■ The basis of their fortunes was, of course, tips, head gamekeepers always being generously "remembered" by their masters' guests. Another unusual case was thdt of John Coates, ; butler to Lord Ribblesdale, who" left £13,500. Butlers are tipped as game- j keepers are, but if takes a good mariy ! tips to make up as large a sum as ^ that. } The explanation in this case was ; judicious investment in house proper- j ty. And tha:t explanation applies also | •to the £8000 fortune left by the late head waiter of the C'ock Tavern in Fleet Street — jone of whose predecessors was immortalised by Tennyson. Another man whom tips made passing wealthy was the late head porter of the Savoy Hotel iri London, Nicholas Mockett, who died in the early paft of this year. Guests always tipped "Old Nick," as he was called, because he was courteous. As a consequence, his will was proved at £20,000. This case, however, is by no means unique. Not long ago a Liverpool head porter died and left exactly £i000 more than Mockett. And the late head porter of the Lord Warden Hotel, in Dover, left £10,000;
