JOSEPH WILLIAM WEBBER

After many months of failing health, Mr. Joseph William Webber, who was an old and well-known resident of Rotorua, passed away quietly at his home at Kawaha Point early on Saturday evening. Although not unexpected, Mr. Webber's death will be re gretted by his wide circle of friends in Rotorua and also by the bowling fraternity throughout the Dominion, who will remember him as a prominent exeeutive officer of the Rotorua Bowling Club at the club's annual open tourneys. Born at Torquay, Devonshire, England, in 1864, deceased received his education in England and France i and in 1884 came to New Zealand, j settling first a.t Wairoa South and then at Tuakau. About two years after his arrival in the Dominion he received an appointment from the Auckland Education Board to the first school in Rotorua, which was situated at the corner of Pukuatua Street at the Ranolf Street turn-off in a building which previously had been used as a library. At a later j date the school was transferred to Tarewa, Ohinemutu, and when the present Rotorua primary school building was erected, Mr. WebbeJ? was appointed headmaster, which position he held until 1912, when he
