NO HOPE
Christchurch, Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Boyle motored home from Hanmer and stopped on the bank of the Waiau River and ate their lunch and bathed at a spot which is a well-known resort for picnicers and bathers. They lay in the sun for a while and Mrs. Boyle then left her husband and walked round a point out of sig'ht. As she did not return Mr. Boyle went to look foi hei but found no trace. The river flows yery swiftly at this point and only the strongest swimmors could survive in ihe waters. Shoi'tly below the river also enters a gorge. A search has been instituted for 18 miles witfyout success and there is little doubt that Mrs. Boyle has been swept a;way and drowned.
